President’s Message

By Cathy Minan, RHIT, CCS – GCHIMA President 2005-2006

Welcome back everyone!  The end of summer is drawing near.  The FHIMA convention is over, school has started and, once again, we begin to crank up our meeting schedule.

To start off my message, I would like to inform you that our association has received some news.  FHIMA has acknowledged the dissolution of the Tri-County region and has informed GCHIMA that these six counties (Citrus, Dixie, Hernando, Levy, Marion, and Pasco) will be incorporated into our region.  Although it is sad to see the end of an association, we are thrilled at the idea of inviting our fellow professionals from these counties to join us.  Fresh faces, fresh ideas, fresh challenges….we are ready to forge ahead!

I hope many of you were able to attend the FHIMA convention in July.  It was a great convention and I believe we all enjoyed our time.  It is always so nice to see old friends, former students and associates, as well as to put faces to the names we so often hear tossed around our HIM world.

During my limited time at the convention, I participated in a discussion at the House of Delegates that I would like to share.  Perry Ellie, MA, RHIA, FAHIMA, Chief Delegate for Florida in conjunction with the Florida Health Information Management Association presented an AHIMA House of Delegates Proposed Resolution entitled “Bridging the Gap! – Education to Employment.”  The intent of this resolution is to enhance dialog and actions to facilitate the employment of graduates from CAHIIM-accredited HIM programs at the baccalaureate and associate degree levels, and the AHIMA-approved coding programs at the pre-degree level.  During Perry’s presentation, I was once again reminded of the important role we hold as HIM professionals in the grooming of the next generation of Health Information Management professionals.  It is so important for us to assist students, recent graduates and approved educational programs in any manner possible to ensure the development of a quality workforce.  Our participation and feedback is vital and will only help us to succeed in the future.  I applaud Perry for his hard work preparing this resolution and I challenge each of you to find some way to contribute to the future of our profession.
